Prof. Emeritus Dato' Dr. Sulaiman Md Yassin

Professor Emeritus Dato’ Dr. Sulaiman Md. Yassin is a Principal Research Fellow at the Institute of Social Science Studies, Universiti Putra Malaysia since May 2009.  His last post was as the Vice-Chancellor, Universiti Malaysia Terengganu (UMT) and Adjunct Professor at Universiti Tun Hussein Onn Malaysia (UTHM).   He had also served as a Dean of Graduate Studies, Director for Extension and Continuing Education and Deputy Vice Chancellor at UPM and Deputy Vice Chancellor at UMS, spanning a period of over thirty-five years, before he officially retired in April 2009. He graduated with a Ph.D from Cornell in 1980 where he also spent a year as a Fulbright Scholar in 1986.

For the last thirty years, he has been involved in national and international projects funded by the World Bank, FAO of the United Nations, ASEAN Secretariat, World Council of Mosques, IAEA, CIRDAP and the Government of Malaysia.  He had worked as a short-term Consultant in over 16 countries. He was the Inter-Country Coordinator in developing an ASEAN Modular Programme, funded by the Australian Government and ASEAN.  Currently, his research interests include the measurement of quality of life and well-being, sustainable livelihood pathways and happiness index development.  He remains active as a Trustee of the Yayasan Basmi Kemiskinan (Poverty Eradication Foundation) since 1995 as well as a Trustee of the American Alumni Malaysia Foundation and Yayasan Pengaman Malaysia (Malaysian Peace Foundation).
